Conditions We Treat
Whether your foot and ankle pain requires functional treatment or accommodation, we can help.
Here are just some of the conditions we commonly accommodate and treat:
Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the plantar fascia, the ligament that connects the heel bone to the toes. It often leads to heel pain and stiffness. Properly-fitted footwear and proper alignment of the foot and ankle ensures that pedal mechanisms are working correctly; this relieves plantar fascial strain.
Ankle Sprain: Stretching or tearing of ligaments in the ankle, usually caused by sudden twisting or rolling of the foot. Proper alignment and stabilization of the ankle ensures that strain upon injured ligaments is reduced and avoided; this allows for healing and prevents reinjury.
Achilles Tendinitis: Inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It can cause pain and stiffness at the back of the ankle. Proper foot and ankle alignment, talocrural and subtalar joint stability and appropriate accommodation of the Achilles tendon insertion allows for healing and prevents reinjury.
Bunions: A bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, causing the big toe to angle towards the other toes. Proper foot and ankle alignment and properly-fitted footwear that reduces external pressure upon the 1st ray relieves pain and reduces progression of the deformity.
Hammertoes: A deformity where one or more toes bend in an unnatural way, resembling a hammer. Properly-fitted depth footwear and metatarsal pressure relief reduces painful contact with toes and prevents progression of metatarsal head calluses.
Ingrown Toenails: When the edge of a toenail grows into the skin, causing pain, redness, and swelling. Properly-fitted footwear prevents painful contact with toes. Proper foot and ankle alignment reduces recruitment of compensatory gait which may give rise to toe pressure secondary to inefficient "toe-off."
Gout: A form of arthritis that can cause sudden and severe joint pain, often affecting the big toe. Properly-fitted footwear prevents painful contact with afflicted portion of feet.
Flat Feet: A condition where the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. Proper foot and ankle alignment ensures that pedal mechanisms are working correctly and that the posterior tibial tendon is not strained with weight bearing and gait. Properly-fitted straight-lasted footwear ensures stability at all phases of gait.
Corns and Calluses: Thickened and hardened areas of skin that develop due to friction or pressure, often on the toes or soles. Proper foot and ankle alignment, properly-fitted footwear, and modification of shoes and/or insoles ensure that pressure upon superficial surfaces of the foot are minimized.
Morton's Neuroma: Thickening of tissue around the nerves between the toes, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness. Prevention of interdigital nerve impingement contributes to pain relief; proper foot and ankle alignment reduces medial heel whip and subsequent cramming of metatarsal heads at terminal stance phase of gait. Properly-fitted footwear ensures that shoes do not squeeze met heads together. Properly-placed metatarsal mounds support transverse arch, maintaining good met head alignment.
Stress Fractures: Small cracks in the bones of the foot or ankle, often caused by overuse or repetitive impact. Proper foot and ankle alignment and properly-fitted footwear that features rocker sole and adequate shock attenuation ensures proper weight distribution throughout plantar surfaces of feet reduce pressures upon injured bones.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the tibial nerve in the ankle, leading to pain, numbness, and tingling in the foot. Proper foot and ankle alignment ensures that the posterior tibial nerve is not strained with weight bearing and gait. Properly-fitted straight-lasted footwear ensures stability at all phases of gait.
Osteoarthritis: Degeneration of joint cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Properly-fitted footwear that features rocker sole technology ensures optimal joint alignment and allows progression through the gait cycle without painful over-recruitment of joints' limited range of motion.
Heel Spurs: Bony growths on the underside of the heel bone that can cause pain and discomfort. Proper foot and ankle alignment ensures that pedal mechanisms are working correctly; this reduces tendon strain that gives rise to spurs. Modification of shoes and/or insoles ensure that pressure upon superficial surfaces of the foot are minimized.
